Spirit: The Authentic Story of the Bell Witch of Tennessee
Spirit tells the story of the Bell family tormented by a Spirit – The Bell Witch. Set on the original grounds of the Bell family, this play is set in the early 19th century, following the Bell family with a large ensemble cast.
This year’s production will be directed by Les Marberry.

Main Characters:
John Bell – 50’s-70’s – Father. Stern, hardworking, determined.
Dean – 40’s – Bell family slave. Hardworking, animated, loyal.
Professor Powell- 30’s-40’s – local teacher. Witty, smart, clever.
Kate Batts – 40’s – Eccentric, verbose, overbearing.
Lucy Bell – 30’s-50’s – Mother. Warm, sincere, firm.
Betsy Bell – teens-20’s – Daughter. Innocent and average. Main victim of the Spirit.
Supporting Characters:
John Bell Jr. – 20’s-30’s – Eldest son. Proud, serious, responsible.
Drewry Bell – 20’s – Middle son. Timid, kind, giving.
Theny Thorn – late teens-20’s – Betsy’s best friend, sassy, sociable.
Elder Fort – 30’s-40’s – Baptist preacher, friendly, warm.
Kids:
Williams & Joel Bell – 13 and under – both boys, but can be played by girls.
